What is File Encryption?

File encryption is the process of converting readable data (plaintext) into an unreadable format (ciphertext) using a cryptographic algorithm and a secret key. Only someone with the correct password/key can reverse the process and recover the original file. Our tool uses AES-256-GCM, a strong, authenticated encryption standard.

What is File Decryption?

File decryption is the reverse process: transforming encrypted data back into its original, usable form using the correct password. Without the right password, the file remains inaccessible. We store the necessary salt and IV alongside the encrypted data so you can decrypt later.

Why encrypt your files?

Security & Privacy

Your files never leave your device. All encryption and decryption are performed locally in your browser using the Web Crypto API. No file or password is uploaded, stored, or shared. We do not use any backend, database, or external servers.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is this tool really free?

Yes, completely free and open to use.

2. What encryption algorithm is used?

AES-256-GCM with PBKDF2 (SHA-256, 100,000 iterations).

3. Can I decrypt a file if I forget the password?

No. Without the correct password, decryption is impossible. There is no backdoor.

4. Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Everything runs in your browser. We have no server to receive your files.

5. What file types are supported?

All file types: PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, ZIP, images, videos, audio, text, etc.

6. How large can the files be?

Depends on your device memory. Modern browsers handle large files; we use efficient chunked reading to avoid freezing.

7. Does it work on mobile?

Yes, the interface is fully responsive and works on smartphones and tablets.

8. Can I encrypt multiple files at once?

Currently one file at a time. Encrypt them individually or zip them first.

9. Is there a password strength requirement?

We recommend at least 12 characters with mix of cases, numbers, and symbols. The meter shows strength.

10. What happens to the encrypted file extension?

The encrypted file is saved with a .enc extension. You can rename it after decryption.
